How is Prostate Surgery Performed?

Prostate surgery is a surgical procedure performed due to enlargement or cancer of the prostate gland. This surgery is generally performed to treat conditions such as difficulty urinating, bleeding, or prostate cancer. Prostate surgeries can be performed using different methods such as open surgery, minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery, and robotic surgery.

Types of Prostate Surgery

  1. Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP): This is the most common prostate surgery. The procedure is performed by inserting an instrument through the urethra to remove the enlarged prostate tissue. It is generally used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

  2. Robot-Assisted Prostatectomy: This is an advanced method used for the removal of cancerous prostate tissue. Robotic surgery offers a more precise and controlled operation with a shorter recovery period.

  3. Open Prostate Surgery: Preferred in cases where the prostate is large. The prostate is removed through an incision made in the abdomen or groin.

Postoperative Recovery After Prostate Surgery

The recovery process after prostate surgery varies from person to person. Urinary control and sexual functions may be temporarily affected for some patients, but generally improve over time. The length of hospital stay may vary depending on the type of surgery.
