How Should Sexuality Be After Kidney Stone Surgery?

Although patients may report feeling well upon discharge from the hospital, the full recovery process after kidney stone surgery usually takes several months. During this period, paying attention to sexual functions is important to avoid prolonging the treatment process.

In many men, after undergoing prostate-related surgeries, certain changes in sexual desire may occur. This can result in an increase in pleasure and sexual desire.

However, in some patients, a decrease in sexual function may be observed after kidney surgery. Even so, it is important to be cautious.

Along with the continuation of erectile function and orgasm sensation, a decrease in semen volume may be observed, often due to retrograde ejaculation, where semen flows back into the bladder instead of out of the body.

This situation has been identified in approximately 75% of cases in certain studies. The reason is that during surgery, the pathway from the bladder may be altered, causing semen to flow inward rather than outward.

For some patients, controlling this condition can be difficult, and additional medication may be required. Since sexual functions can be affected to this extent, it is advisable to abstain from sexual activity for a period of time.

The body needs time to recover, and since this process can take weeks, it is very important to be careful. Your doctor will also inform you about this after the surgery and provide all necessary warnings and recommendations.

There is no proven direct link between kidney stone diseases and performance in an active sexual life.

The most likely issue in the sexual life of a person with kidney stones is difficulty focusing on their partner or a decrease in sexual desire due to kidney pain.

Pain caused by kidney stones can interfere with emotional experiences. People with kidney stone disease generally do not experience sexual problems when they are not in pain.

If a stone that has fallen into the bladder becomes lodged in the penis, it can affect sexual activity. In such cases, drinking plenty of water can help facilitate the passage of the stone.

Sometimes, kidney stone fragments can become stuck in the urethra leading to the penis. When this happens, the stones can negatively affect blood circulation in the small vessels in that area.

As a result of this negative effect, erectile dysfunction may occur. Erectile dysfunction is one of the problems that can adversely affect sexual life and may lead to decreased desire.
