What Is a Normal Penis Size?

Penis Size: Data from Turkey and Worldwide

Penis size is a frequently discussed topic regarding male health and sexual function. The largest penis size study in Turkey was conducted by a team led by myself. In this study, the penis length of 2,276 healthy young men was measured, and the results were published in an international journal (Relationship between penile size and somatometric parameters in 2276 healthy young men. Int J Impot Res. 2012 May-Jun).

Findings of Our Study:

  • Average erect penis length: 13.8 cm (±1.5 cm)
  • No significant correlation was found between penis size and body measurements (i.e., penis size is not related to height, weight, or body mass index)
  • No significant differences were detected between Turkey geographical regions and cities

Although these data show that penis size is generally around 13 cm, other studies have reported similar results. However, differences in measurement methods may lead to variations in these results.

What Is a Normal Penis Size?

Although the average penis length is around 13 cm, penises longer than 10 cm in adult men are generally considered normal. Penises shorter than 10 cm are considered small, and those shorter than 7 cm are classified as micropenis. Micropenis is usually due to hormonal or developmental issues.

How Can You Measure Penis Length and Girth?

Penis length and girth should be measured accurately. Especially young people who watch pornographic material often rush to measure themselves. However, it is important to be informed about correct measurement techniques.

1. Measuring Penis Length in the Erect State:

There are two main methods to measure penis length:

  • Using a Ruler: You can use a ruler to measure the length of the penis in the erect state. The ruler is placed at the base of the penis and the distance to the tip is measured.
  • Stretching Method: The head of the penis is gently pulled with two or three fingers, and the length is measured. In this method, the penis is stretched, and the measurement is taken from the base, leaving a 3-4 mm gap before the zero point of the ruler.

In scientific studies, the most accurate measurement is performed by pressing the ruler into the pubic fat pad. Before penis lengthening surgery, both methods are used to estimate the expected postoperative elongation.

2. Measuring Penis Length in the Flaccid State:

Flaccid penis length can vary depending on daily life conditions. Factors such as cold or stress can affect penis size. Therefore, it is best to take several measurements at different times and calculate the average.

3. Measuring Penis Girth:

To measure penis girth, use a soft measuring tape like those used by tailors. This can be done in both flaccid and erect states. Girth measurement is most accurate during erection. However, girth should be measured in the natural state, not while stretching the penis.

Scientific studies on penis length and girth play an important role in determining average values. By using correct measurement methods, it is possible to minimize personal health and aesthetic concerns. Remember that penis size can vary individually, and with accurate information and measurement techniques, you can obtain healthy results.
